British businesses are struggling to hire workers in the face of a booming labour market that has driven unemployment to record lows.
Headhunters reported further strong demand for staff in the private sector in May, according to a monthly jobs report compiled by KPMG and the Recruitment and Employment Confederation. Demand for labour across the economy is historically high, giving workers stronger bargaining power to negotiate pay and conditions.
“These numbers show a hugely positive jobs market if you are looking for work,” Neil Carberry, chief executive of the confederation, said. “While the pace of growth has dropped after a stellar first quarter, by any normal measure there are still lots of vacancies out there, offering improved wages.”
